From what I know of both of them, I think that it would be a big mistake to grant Mr. Gaunt custody of this child, and that Ms. Black is a significantly more suitable parent.

Mr. Gaunt is not only arrogant, but also has a concerning passion for the Dark Arts. When we were together, he would talk about them sometimes. This would be one thing if it was only an academic fascination, but I learned definitively that it was not when, upon learning that I was a half-blood rather than a pureblood, he ended the relationship. As for Ms. Black, I didn’t interact with her much, but she seems to me to be responsible and level-headed, and certainly much more suitable to be a parent.
