*glances at Rose* Thirty more seconds and you would have been late. You'd do best to keep track of your time.

Alright, class. Let's make one thing clear: I am not here to hold your hand or be your friend. I am here as your teacher, and my primary objective is to see that you learn. Side conversations *looks pointedly at Scorpius and Rose* will not be tolerated, and any that I catch will be replayed for the entire class to hear. Are these expectations clear?

Good. Now. As you are first-years, your instruction in this subject matter will be primarily theoretical, with the exception of possibly some closely guarded encounters with certain creatures. Should you prove yourselves highly, highly advanced, it is possible that at the end of the year you will be taught some extremely basic defensive spells. This will not occurr if you prove yourselves irresponsible, however. Consider that your only warning. Everybody open your books to Page 4.

Now, the first chapter of this book is a brief history of defensive magic. For your homework tonight, you will be reading pages 1-3 and writing a brief summary of them. If you want a head start, the next night's homework will be pages 8-15, on magical creatures. For today's class, however, we will be discussing pages 4-7, because I know how rumors grow around this topic. These pages, of course, cover the dark wizard Voldemort and the two wars fought against him. Who would like to tell us about the first wizarding war, or pages 4-5?
